The aim of Baltic Sea Day is to inspire people to enjoy our unique home sea and to take concrete actions and make promises to protect it. In addition to celebration, the day is intended to raise awareness about the sea’s diverse nature, culture, and history.

Initiated by the John Nurminen Foundation, Baltic Sea Day is celebrated annually on the last Thursday of August through various events and activities.

On Baltic Sea Day, the Navy Band offers a maritime-themed concert. The performance includes a diverse and interesting selection of march music: alongside traditional Finnish classics, the program features works by American composer John Philip Sousa, Czech composer Julius Fučík, and Austrian composer Johann Strauss II. In addition, the concert includes Sea Pictures (Merikuvia), one of Uuno Klami’s most renowned compositions, which vividly portrays the moods of the sea with powerful and expressive musical colors.
